One of Them Days (2025)
Comedy fare at its finest, One of Them Days may not reinvent the wheel when it comes to the buddy comedy script, but does breathe fresh life into it nevertheless with modern punchlines, head-strong performances, and over-the-top set dressing.
Keke Palmer and SZA headline this wacky adventure, with the time-tried practice of making a normal scenario (“not having rent money”) into a renegade adventure. Keke, with her bold attitude and headstrong determination, is the rational rock of “One of Them Days,” as she manages to present unmatched energy that, in turn, radiates across her fellow co-star and supporting characters. My knowledge of the latter was limited to the music world with songs like “Saturn” and “Snooze,” but SZA’s acting debut manages to be more polished than most newcomers. Her bubbly, naive personality catapults the film from scenario to scenario, and her tangents and explanations provide the film a catalyst for its comedic style to take root among audiences.
“One of Them Days” has the most jam-packed supporting cast I’ve seen in a while from a flick, filled with eccentric characters, big bad bullies, and gangsters. Nearly all types of moviegoers will be pleased with the sheer variety of comedic material in this, from fraudulent payment companies to a biscuit thief who randomly steals customers’ orders in order to consume bread goods. It does what reality TV can’t do nowadays by showing theatrical-worthy antics in a tight package, having such chaotic focus that there’s no time to hang on a joke for too long.
Additionally, the set dressing in “One of Them Days” manages to aimfully capture contemporary life, with an interconnected apartment complex serving as the main setting that makes everyone feel like family, allowing for a lack of exposition that benefits the pacing of the film. Even when there are obvious twists, “One of Them Days” still manages to feel down-to-earth.
Overall, “One of Them Days” is a delightful, buddy-comedy crowd-pleaser that rightfully earns its reception among audiences with smart performances, funny gags, and a sense of community that goes above expectations.
